The interiors of Vindo Yachts are beautifully crafted in Mahogany, and finished in rubbed effect varnish, creating an elegant, warm atmosphere.  The cabin house sides are solid mahogany, and the exposed laminated beams on the overhead contrast beautifully with the off -white underside of the deck.

"Owl's" interior has been maintained in excellent condition, and show "as new".  Starting aft, there is an enclosed cabin to port (unique in this vintage of vessel).  The berth is wide and comfortable for two.  A hanging locker is further forward within the cabin.  Two opening ports provide ventilation for the cabin, and a door provides privacy.

To starboard is a well layed out, U shaped galley, always considered the best for off-shore sailing.  Double SS sinks served by Hot and Cold Pressure Water are in the forward section, set into a beautiful Mahogany countertop.  In the outboard facing section is a recent Force 10 Propane Stove with 3 burners and an oven.  the aft section, also a Mahogany counter, has a recessed SS lined Ice Box.  There are lockers outboard of the stove that hold custom Vindo dishware and glassware.  Additional storage is found under the counters fore and aft.

The main cabin begins with a navigation station to port, followed forward by a settee/ berth.  To starboard is a very comfortable "U" shaped settee that converts to a double berth.  A large mahogany dining table is on the centerline and has folding leafs.  A large hatch is overhead, and two opening ports alow for good ventilation.  Excellent storage is found under the berths and in lockers and book racks above the berths.

Forward of the main cabin, to starboard, is a spacious enclosed head area.  A vanity locker has a large porcelain sink set into a mahogany countertop, and is served by hot & cold pressure water.  The marine toilet is forward.  There also is the ability to shower in the head area via a telephone type showerhead.  An overhead dorade vent and an opening port provide good ventilation.

Opposite the head area is a large hanging locker and the passageway forward.

The forward stateroom has comfortable v-berths and a filler cushion allowing the berth to become a double.  Storage is found under the berths, and in large, enclosed bins above each berth.  A large overhead hatch and two opening ports offer ventilation to the cabin, and a mahogany door provides privacy.

All of the interior cushions were replaced in 2005.

"Owl" was built at the Vindo Yard on the Island of Orust, on the West Coast of Sweden. This area is well known for it's boatbuilding industry going back into the 11th century.

The hull is constructed of hand - laid woven roving combined with Divynicell foam core.  The ballast is of solid lead  castings, internally glassed into the hull.  The deck consists if a fiberglass structure that includes the cockpit and lockers.  The deck to hull join includes micro balloons and resin as a filler, then is bonded with fiberglass laminates to form a leak proof unit.  The side decks turn upward about 3" as a start of the cabin trunk, then the entire cabin trunk is constructed of wood.

The cabin house sides are built of 1" thick solid Mahogany, screwed to the "lip" on 3" centers.  The beautiful curve of the forward end of the cabin house is a series of seven laminates of solid Mahogany, masterfully fitted to the deck and house sides.  Laminated deck beams are constructed using alternating woods for a beautiful effect, and are fitted on 12" centers into the house sides.  The deck is constructed of marine plywood with 1/2" Teak overlay, beautifully fitted into a Mahogany covering boards.

The decks and cockpit , including all locker covers are sheathed in 1/2" Teak.  The vertical surfaces of the cockpit are sheathed in varnished Mahogany, eliminating any exposure of fiberglass above the hull.

Restoration of "Owl"

"Owl" was purchased by the current owner in 2004. She was in very nice cosmetic condition, and had recently received new sails and was re-powered only two years before.

Her construction is unique for a fiberglass sailboat in that the cabin house is built entirely of wood, as are the cockpit coamings.  All surfaces, such as the cockpit, hatches and decks are teak.  As such, after nearly 30 years, "Owl" began to show signs of age.

Having enjoyed Sailing "Owl" in his first year with her, the owner decided to bring her back to her full, original beauty, as he has done with every boat he has owned.

Work started on the cabin  where it was found that water had entered the overhead at the mast wire thru-deck fitting.  The entire cabin top was removed and replaced with new plywood under sheathing and all new teak deck.  This was beautifully fit into the mahogany cabin house sides which was an art in itself to do.  Teak was cut long enough for the entire length of the cabin, thus no joints were necessary.  (And a custom fitting was made for the mast wires to eliminate the problem for the future!)

Continuing the re-fit included:  All of the teak decks were removed, including the cockpit area and locker covers.  New teak was layed down and fitted as perfectly as originally performed at Vindo.  All new cockpit coamings were constructed using a laminated diagonal construction that will prove better than the original construction. All new locker covers were made in teak and new hatches in the overhead were installed.  Additionally, the bottom was stripped of old paint and barrier coated.

The re-fit work took place over the winter of 2004 and 2005, and included re-finishing of all exterior surfaces that were not replaced as well.  Additionally, all Nichol and chrome finishes were stripped and polished, new interior cushions provided, and all lockers were painted and cleaned to be "as new".  For the final touches, "Owl" received an Awl-Grip painted hull finish in gray, with a white gunwale stripe and boot in 2010 at Robinhood Marine, along with a new SS striker rail.

The words "Custom Vindo" are used because many items were added or re-fit better than the original construction.  For instance, when the pads for the winches were replaced, 2" solid teak was used in lieu of the mahogany plywood previously used.  The hull was Awl-Grip painted "Medium Gray", and a whale stripe in White Awl-Grip was used, along with the boot stripe.  Further distinguishing "Owl" form any others, the striker rail bronze strip was replaced with Stainless Steel; a beautiful touch and accent. Below, custom teak framed overhead screens were built for the three hatches, all of which hinge down for hatch opening access.  There is also a screen for the lower companionway drop board.  The brass lamps have all been replaced, and all hinges on cabinets have been replaced with SS.  Lastly, a custom, curved mast wire fitting was fabricated which eliminates the potential for water entering the deck in this area.

All said, "Owl" is a very special yacht.  For anyone that ever admired and desired a wooden vessel, "Owl" deserves your consideration.  With her fiberglass hull and her totally updated and re-built deck house and decks, "Owl" is ready for ease of ownership for many years to come!
